Question

Is it possible to wrap a shaker style kitchen door?

Answer

Absolutely, yes! Refreshing your kitchen doesn’t always mean replacing doors or spending a fortune. Vinyl wrapping is a great option if your cabinet doors are still structurally sound, but the finish looks dated or worn.
Instead of removing and replacing them, you can simply cover the existing surface with Frenchic’s durable adhesive vinyl wraps. For my shaker style kitchen door, I chose Frenchic’s Nordic Oak vinyl wrap, which gives a natural wood effect while still keeping the kitchen light and modern.

Here’s exactly how I did it:

Step 1: Prepare the Surface

Preparation is key to getting a smooth, professional result. Start by removing the door from the cabinet and placing it on a flat working surface. Give the door a thorough clean with Frenchic’s Sugar Soap to remove grease, dust, or any residue that might stop the vinyl from sticking properly.

Kitchen doors can often have hidden grease build-up, so make sure the surface is completely clean and dry before applying anything.

Step 2: Work in Sections

Because this is a shaker style door, I chose to wrap it in sections rather than trying to cover the entire door with one large piece. Although you can also do this.
I wrapped it in this order:

1.    Centre panel first
2.    Frame pieces around the panel.
3.    Remaining edges and borders

Working in sections allows the vinyl to sit neatly within the recessed detail. Don't worry if there are creases, you can smooth them out with a hairdryer in Step 4.

Step 3: Apply the Vinyl

Once you’ve cut a piece of vinyl slightly larger than the section you're covering, position it carefully over the surface. Start smoothing it down from the middle outwards using the smoothing tool from the applicator kit. This pushes air out as you work and prevents bubbles forming under the vinyl. Take your time during this stage. Slow, steady smoothing will give the best result.

Step 4: Use Heat to Help

A hairdryer on a warm setting is incredibly helpful when wrapping doors with grooves or panel details. Gently warming the vinyl makes it more flexible so it can mould into the recessed panel and around edges much more easily. Just apply a little heat at a time while pressing the vinyl into place with the smoothing tool or your fingers.

Step 5: Trim Neatly

Once the vinyl is fully smoothed down, it’s time to trim the excess. Use the sharp utility knife from the applicator kit to carefully cut along the edges so the vinyl fits neatly inside the recesses and along the frame.

Step 6: Repeat for Each Section

Continue repeating the same process for the rest of the door frame pieces until the entire door is covered. Working patiently section by section, will give a clean and professional finish.

The Finished Result

Once the door is fully wrapped, you can reattach it to the cabinet and enjoy the transformation. The Nordic Oak finish adds warmth and texture while keeping the kitchen looking modern and fresh.
