Lovely to meet you!

I’m Jen, and I’m passionate about colour. I believe your home is your sanctuary and that colour is a truly transformative force that brings life, harmony and balance into every living space. As the creative force behind interior design studio, The House Alchemist, I specialise in colour-focused design, pairing sustainable and mindful practices with style, beauty and fun to transform homes into vibrant spaces that truly feel like you.

With over 20 years of experience, I’ve dedicated myself to understanding how colour impacts our emotions, energy and wellbeing. Colour is more than just an aesthetic choice. Through intentional design, I help people harness the energy of colour to create homes that reflect their true essence. Whether it’s through personalised colour palettes, seasonal adjustments or hands-on DIY projects - my goal is to make your home a sanctuary that supports your journey and uplifts your spirit.

My own journey has been a vibrant tapestry, woven from a lifelong fascination with the power of interiors and colour. I studied theatre costume design and interpretation - learning how colours, patterns and materials shape our experience and wellbeing. As I honed my craft, I fell in love with upcycling, transforming old furniture into beautiful, personalised pieces that resonate with the heart.

This hands-on creativity propelled me to study holistic interior design and colour theory. I’m currently renovating an old hotel in the south of France, and I can’t wait to share the transformative process, showcasing new techniques as I breathe new life into this beautiful space.

My favourite project

Quirky, impactful and bold – the Grand Entrance in our family home in Scotland is an amuse bouche of my design style if you like. I kept it black and white, opting for the softer tones of Parchment and Blackjack wall paint, to help to reset the eyes after leaving my colour-rich rooms. For the panel design, I was inspired by the Queen's Staircase at the Palace of Versailles and a famous French set designer, who painted architectural embellishments on interior walls.

I taped out the stripes and panels and painted them on. Gold metallic leaf was added, and I used fancy napkins to decoupage the staircase handrail, using Black Forest wall paint for the iron spindles. I later added Macaroon wall paint pops on both the stairs and walls. Sometimes just adding a little more really makes the final look.

Colours I love

Colours change with the seasons, and these rich and lustrous Frenchic shades are my current favourites. A palette of vibrant, deep colours creates a snug and characterful feel for the cosiest season.
