How Many Coats of Paint Do I Need?

Key FAQ Points

  • For most painting projects, a minimum of two full coats is recommended to give a durable, great-looking finish
  • Porous surfaces like MDF will need extra coats due to moisture absorption
  • For new plaster, use an initial ‘mist’ coat before applying two full coats.
  • Certain colours, like greys, may cover better than others
  • You should also make sure you’re using the right amount of paint, based on recommendations on the tin

---

For most projects, a minimum of two full coats of Frenchic paint is recommended to achieve your desired look. However, the number of coats you need can depend on a few different factors:

Porous surfaces

You’ll find that different surfaces might need additional coats. For instance, MDF can absorb moisture from the paint and lead to a patchy appearance. This means that it is a good idea to seal or apply a mist coat first, as discussed in our guide to painting MDF.

This is similar if you're painting new plaster. In this case, it's important to apply a mist coat first – a thinned-down layer of paint – before adding two full coats to achieve even coverage. Check out our guide to painting new plaster for more information.

Coverage of colours

Some colours have better coverage than others. For example, greys cover well with two coats, while reds and vibrant colours might need additional layers.

The colour of the surface can also play its part. You’ll find that on darker surfaces, light paint colours may need more coats to fully cover the base. Similarly, darker colours over light surfaces could also require additional layers for a rich, even finish.

Thin coats

Remember to always check the paint tin for specific recommendations, as following these guidelines will ensure you apply the right number of coats and get the result you want.

If your coats are too thinly applied, coverage and durability will be compromised.  Check the rate of coverage recommended for your paint. For example, if your tin advises it will cover 2m2 and after painting that area you have lots of paint left, then your coats are too thin!
