All colours can be grouped as either warm or cool. So, what are warm colours? Comprising reds, pinks, yellows, and oranges, these colours are higher energy. They feel positive and stimulating. However, this doesn’t mean all warm colours have the same effect in a room. Bold, saturated colours tend to bring more drama or playfulness, whilst softer, paler or muted versions have more subtle effects – so they can feel nurturing.
Adding to the mix is the effect of undertones. Some warm colours have cooler undertones – and the reverse is also true in that cool colours sometimes have warm undertones. Complex colours like these have great flexibility.
Undertones are key when choosing neutral colours, including white and black. Warm neutrals have red, orange and yellow undertones and are easy to use in any room from living rooms to bedrooms.
