How to Apply Vinyl Wrap to Furniture
Vinyl wraps are a quick, easy and cost-effective way to transform furniture with a range of different effects. But if you haven’t used them before, you might be wondering how to apply vinyl wrap on furniture. The answer? It’s refreshingly simple!
In the video below, DIY Mum, Kayleigh Sherbourne, shows you just how easy it is using Frenchic’s marble-effect Carrara Smoke wrap. Or read on for our step-by-step instructions including simple preparation and application.
What you’ll need
- A Frenchic vinyl wrap
- Frenchic’s application kit, which includes a sharp knife and smoothing tool
- Some scissors
- A hairdryer
- Frenchic’s Sugar Soap
- Some tissue or a cloth
Choosing your furniture
Start by choosing a suitable piece of furniture for your transformation. Vinyl wraps adhere well to most smooth surfaces, so you just need to avoid anything with grooves or detailing. Flat pack furniture is a popular choice!
Kayleigh has chosen a simple side table, which doubles up as a storage basket. It has a removable wooden top with a metal base – it’s the top she’s transforming in the video above.
Preparing the surface
The first thing to do is make sure the furniture is clean. That’s because any grime, grease, dirt or dust will impair the wrap’s ability to stick to your surface.
No need to scrub for hours though. Simply use Frenchic’s Sugar Soap to give it a once over. A piece of tissue or small cloth will suffice, then leave to fully dry before moving onto the next steps.
Cutting the wrap
Time to get your wrap ready. Kayleigh places the wrap on the floor, then puts her wooden panel on top, so she can cut the right size from the wrap.
If you’re working with a larger piece, you may need to measure the furniture and cut off. It’s a good idea to cut off a little more than you need to ensure full coverage.
Applying vinyl wrap to furniture
When you’re ready to go, simply peel back the protective film then place onto your chosen surface. Don’t stress about perfection too much – our wraps are repositionable, so you can remove it and try again if needed.
Next, use the smoother from the application kit to flatten and iron out the wrap. You want to work out any air so it’s completely smooth. Once the wrap is applied, you can cut off some of the excess to make it a bit easier to work with.
Then use the hairdryer to warm the edges, while pulling the wrap tight to the furniture. With your wrap full applied, you can cut off the excess more neatly using the sharp knife provided in the application kit. Voila – your furniture is transformed!
Caring for your furniture
Vinyl wraps for furniture are a low-maintenance way to upcycle and transform. They’re durable, wipe-clean and heat-resistant up to 70°C, so you don’t have to worry about coffee cups, spills, knocks and general wear and tear.
Simply clean as you would with any other piece of furniture and your wrapped piece should stay fabulous for years to come.
