Good furniture is built to last, but sometimes its style and finish can start to look a bit tired and dated. Painting and upcycling your existing pieces is a great way to extend their life and create a new, statement piece for your home.

Here, I’ll take you step by step through the process of preparing, painting and transforming an old wooden table, giving it a fresh new look using Frenchic paint.

Step 1

Preparing & sanding

Use Sugar Soap, a sponge and scrubbing brush to thoroughly clean your table and a damp cloth to wipe away any residue. Next, sand your table to prepare for painting. Start with low grit paper and work to higher grades to remove all existing varnish. Remember to wear a dust mask and vacuum all dust and debris before the next step.

Step 2

Painting the base

For this project we’ve used Frenchic Trim Paint for the base, self-priming you can skip applying a primer and move straight onto applying colour. We’ve chosen Panther, a muted black shade which will offer a nice contrast to the table top in Step 3.

Step 3

Painting the table top

Mix Frenchic Finishing Coat with a touch of Lazy Range Whitey White to make a thin glaze that is semi-transparent when dry - allowing the natural wood grain to show through. Apply a minimum of two coats, leaving to dry between coats and using an Oval Brush for a smooth finish.

Step 4

Finishing coat

The final touch is a coat of Frenchic Finishing Coat applied directly to the table top. Transparent and easy to apply it creates a tough and durable surface - so your table is ready for anything life throws at it! For a matt finish you can use Frenchic Tuff Top Coat instead.
