Frenchic paint is versatile enough to be used on a variety of surfaces, including metal. Whether you’re tackling a DIY project or refreshing your home, our paints, particularly the Al Fresco Inside/Outside Range, are ideal for creating durable, weatherproof finishes on metal.
Why use Frenchic paint on metal?
Frenchic paints, including the Al Fresco range, are self-priming, meaning they adhere well to metal surfaces without the need for an additional primer. This range is also weatherproof and UV-resistant, making it a perfect choice for outdoor metal items like garage doors, garden furniture and gates.
If you’re working with bare or uncoated ferrous (iron-based) metals it is good practice to apply a metal primer prior to painting. However, non-ferrous metals like copper and aluminium do not require priming.
How to paint metal with Frenchic paint
1. Clean the surface
Remove any dirt, grease or residue from the metal surface using a Sugar Soap solution. Rinse thoroughly and allow it to dry completely.
2. Prepare the surface
Sand the surface lightly to abrade it. This helps the paint adhere better.
Treat or remove any rust or peeling paint before you begin.
3. Choose the right paint
The Al Fresco range is an excellent choice for metal surfaces, offering a smooth, long-lasting finish.
For indoor projects, Frenchic’s Lazy Range or Original Artisan Range can also be used with proper preparation.
4. Apply the paint
Stir the paint thoroughly before use.
Use a good-quality brush or roller for even application. Follow the natural direction of any grooves or panels for a smooth finish.
5. Add extra coats
Apply at least two coats of paint for optimal coverage. Check the tin for drying times between coats.
Allow the paint to cure fully, which can take up to three weeks for maximum durability.
Tips for painting metal
- Avoid painting in very cold, hot or humid conditions to ensure the paint dries and cures properly.
- Use dust sheets to protect surrounding areas from spills or drips.
- Remove masking tape while the paint is still wet for cleaner edges.
