MDF is one of those materials that quietly does a lot of heavy lifting in modern homes. You’ll find it on shelving, panelling, cabinet doors, skirting boards and lots of different furniture like wardrobes. In short, it's smooth, versatile and takes paint beautifully. That said, it has a few quirks that are worth knowing about before you pick up a brush, for both bare MDF and MDF that’s previously been painted.

Painting porous, bare MDF

The main challenge with bare MDF is that it’s naturally porous. That’s especially true on cut edges. If you paint straight onto it, you’ll get a patchy finish, even after a few coats.

To overcome this, simply apply two coats of Frenchic Finishing Coat. This will seal your MDF ready for painting, saving you time and effort with your coats of paint and providing much better results.

Painting previously painted MDF

MDF often comes pre-painted, particularly MDF components in pieces of furniture. In this case, you don’t have the issue of a porous surface. However, you do need to make sure it’s clean and free from dust, grease and grime. These can create a barrier between the MDF and paint which stops it adhering properly. To avoid that, simply wipe down with Sugar Soap, rinse and then leave to dry.

Once it’s dry, hand sand the surface. You don’t need to take it back to bare MDF, just enough to abrade it. This matters most if it was previously painted in a gloss or other shiny finish, as that sheen can affect how well your Frenchic paint adheres. A quick sand keys the surface and gives the paint something to grip. Wipe away any sanding dust before you start painting.
