Stencil painted furniture has been around for centuries and nowadays is used to re-create the look of intricate, previously hand-painted designs such as folk art, tiles, and door trims… all without the need for a steady hand!

It’s a fantastic way to enhance an upcycled piece of furniture, a tray, a faux-tiled splashback, ladderback chair backs, or anything you fancy for that matter.

Here’s how to get started using your chosen Frenchic paint colour and range (if you’re using Original Artisan Range, do not apply wax to seal until after you have finished stencilling). Allow the paint plenty of time to dry thoroughly.

Step one:

Place your stencil in the area you want to enhance and hold it in place with low-tack masking tape to prevent it from moving around.

Step two:

Choose your stencil colour or colours and helpful to decant them onto a plate or similar and don’t worry if they dry out a little bit because it’s better that way, as it makes the paint easier to work with for stencilling.

Step three:

Less paint is definitely the way to go, so have some kitchen paper to hand. After you have dabbed your stencil brush into the paint, dab it off on the paper to remove any excess, this will ensure a crisp outline to your stencil.

Step four:

Take your time making sure you are happy with the coverage in each section of the stencil before lifting it off to see the finished results.

Suggestions for more detail:

Try using more than one colour to give an interesting and colourful blended effect

Try stencilling with our metallics. Frensheens and Frenshimmers look particularly great over a dark colour.

Everything you need:

Top tip:

Have a go at raised stencilling by using a quick dry filler and an artist’s palette knife – it’s very effective and you can even colour the filler using any Frenchic paint!

Have fun stencilling and remember if you need a helping hand or want more assistance with this just ask or visit your local stockist to see if they run workshops locally to you – not only is it a fun way to spend time with your friends learning a new skill, but very therapeutic and mindful too.
