Dark colours can bring depth, character and a sense of romance to a home, creating the perfect backdrop for treasured finds, vintage furniture and botanical details. For Ruby Ardolino, a dark romantic aesthetic inspired by academia, vintage decor and nature is all about layering rich colours to create spaces that feel personal, atmospheric and full of character.
Here, Ruby shares how she uses Frenchic’s rich, moody shades throughout her home, from making a dramatic first impression in the hallway to creating cosy, intimate spaces and carrying the palette outdoors.
Hallway
Starting in the hallway, Blackjack creates a dramatic first impression as soon as you step through the door.

Living Room
Moving into the living room, I wanted something warmer and more romantic, so I chose Boho Berry for the walls, with Ivory Tower above to soften the room. I brought Blackjack back in on the furniture and fireplace, creating a cohesive look that gives my books, antiques and collected pieces a darker backdrop and ties the room in with the rest of the house.

Kitchen / Diner
It continues into my apothecary, where I’ve used Blackjack across both the wall and my Welsh dresser – perfect as a backdrop for all of the botanical details and curiosities I keep here. Through to the dining area, Blackjack creates a cosy, intimate backdrop, although I’m already planning my next project – adding Stone Rosie above the panelling for a little more warmth. The wooden elements throughout these spaces have all been protected using Frenchic Finishing Coat.
